5 top reasons why your air conditioning system is drippings and leaking water?

Have you ever wondered why your aircon is leaking water? Can you imagine that you wake up in the middle of the night at 3:00am, hearing dripping sound continuously from your indoor Fan Coil Unit (FCU) or touching a wet floor while going out of your bedroom for breakfast?  By then, your bedroom floor would be filled with dirt and water which leaking from the FCU and you will need to spend close to an hour of your precious time cleaning up the place which is a lot of hassle.

Aircon leaking water are commonly happening across households in Singapore. Here are the top 5 reasons why your air conditioning system is drippings and leaking water.

1. Clogging of drainage pipe

A clogged drainage pipe is the most common cause of aircon leaking water from the back causing puddles of water on the floor. The drainage pipe is usually clogged with jelly-like substances, dirt, dust, sludge, mould or fungi. When these substances accumulate in the drainage pipe, it leads to a delay in water flowing in the indoor FCU. Thus, the inflow of water into drainage pipe is slower than average. This will lead to excess water storage and resulting in the leaking water from your aircon unit.

2. Dirty air filter and water tray

A lot of people do not realise that a dirty air filter and water tray can lead to an aircon water leaking. A dirty air filter will block the airflow on the evaporator coil and causing the temperature of the air around the evaporator coil to drop, ice will then start forming inside the indoor FCU. When the aircon is switched OFF, the heat from the surrounding air causes the ice on the evaporator coil to melt and water will start dripping from the FCU.

3. Broken pump

When you have a broken pump, water from the overflow pan will not be able to be drawn into the drainage pipe. After a prolonged period of time, when too much water is accumulated in the pan, it will start to leaking water.

4. Low refrigerant

Just like dirty air filter and water tray, low refrigerant will lower the pressure as well in the air conditioning system causing evaporator coil to freeze and ice up. When the ice starts to melt, water will start to leaking water from the FCU.

5. Poor installation of indoor Fan Coil Unit (FCU)

If the FCU is not installed properly, it could cause leaking water to happen. You need to ensure that installation the built-in flexible FCU drainage pipe is not lower than 16mm UPVC drainage pipe. It will cause water unable to flow smoothly, therefore leaking water from the front panel.
