Wear and tear is a common sight for all devices after a prolonged period of using it, especially for devices such as the aircon unit that most of us will be using every night and leaving it on for hours. This will result in the aircon unit being worn off easily.
When do I know that I need to refill my aircon refrigerant?
Here are the things to check:
1. Does your aircon unit take a long time to cool your room?
When the aircon unit takes a long time to cool your room, it means that
the air the vents are blowing out is much higher than the ideal cooling
temperature as more heat is being trapped in the cooling chamber due to
the low refrigerant level.
When the air the vents blow out is warmer,
it means that the time that the needs to cool your room will be much
longer now.
2. Take a look at the refrigerant line. Is there ice forming on it?
Low refrigerant level, means low pressure therefore temperature of the refrigerant line will be low as well. When the refrigerant level is low, the temperature of the refrigerant at the beginning of the evaporator coils are low. This will then cause the condensation of the moisture in the air onto the coils to freeze up, which causes the ice to start forming on it. As the ice starts forming on the coils, it will cause the surrounding parts to freeze up as well, which eventually leads to the ice on the refrigerant line.
3. Hearing hissing or bubbling sounds from your aircon unit?
This could be due to leaks from your refrigerant line. Refrigerant lines contain high pressure for it to be able to cycle the refrigerant throughout the aircon unit. As such, when the refrigerant line in your aircon unit has a leak, it will cause the bubbling and hissing sounds due to the high pressure in the line.
4. Sudden increase in your electricity bills?
This sudden increase is linked to the aircon unit taking longer time to cool your rooms. Longer cooling cycles in an aircon system means that the aircon unit is working harder to keep your rooms cool, which results in the unit using up more energy than it should be. Hence, keep a close look in your electricity bills, if you see a sudden increase, do check out the above signs to see if your aircon unit is the cause.
